A ceremony to launch the construction of an innovative sustainable primary school will take place at the site in Great Notley, near Braintree.
David Rex, Chairman of Essex County Council and Iris Pumnell, Chairman of Education Committee will join Moira Fraser Steele, Director of Education at the Design Council to officially launch the construction of the first green school in the county.
The environmentally friendly school was designed for Essex County Council in partnership with the Design Council by architects Allford Hall Monaghan Morris - winners of the international competition to build an energy efficient building for the future.
The winning team led by the architects have produced an inspiring blueprint for other designers to follow.
The 1.2 million project is being built by a local company, Jackson Building and key features will include:
- breathing walls to aid ventilation
- PVC - free cables
- a green roof covered in sedum, a low grade succulent plant, to filter UV rays and provide insulation
- efficient use of space - the entire school fits into a triangular space of 1.032 m2
The school is due to open in September 1999 and will provide places for 180 local children from Great Notley Garden Village - some will also be present on the day of the launch.
Other representatives from Essex County Council, Design Council, architects - Allford Hall Monaghan Morris and Jackson Building will also be available on the day.
