143 new Millennium Products with just four months to go

Millennium Dome to feature dedicated display of Millennium Products

Monday 6 September 1999

The Design Council today unveiled 143 new Millennium Products as the nationwide initiative on innovation entered its final four months.

It was also announced today that a dedicated display of Millennium Products will be installed at the Millennium Experience, putting the spotlight on British innovation as the world’s attention turns to Greenwich.

Millennium Products will be represented on a specially landscaped structure called ‘The Spiral of Innovation,’ which will command dramatic views of the Thames.

Design Council Chairman John Sorrell said today: ‘The Millennium Products Spiral of Innovation is a spectacular testimony to the creativity and innovation of UK business today. This tribute is long overdue. It is vital we recognise and encourage UK innovation - it is the key to business survival and prosperity in the 21st Century. Indeed we should be proud of our creative abilities - the UK has the most impressive record of innovation and invention in the world. The products displayed on the Spiral of Innovation and within the Dome itself spell out the message: the UK is still a world-class pioneer in finding business and industrial solutions.’

The Millennium Products announced in this fourth tranche - bringing the total so far to 777 - range from Rapiscan, a roadside saliva test for drugs, and Solotic, a space-age firefighters’ helmet incorporating a thermal imaging camera, to a flexible plastic TV screen just 2mm thick and electronic touch-sensitive ‘smart fabric’.

They were announced at Glasgow’s new Lighthouse building - also named a Millennium Product - to highlight the breadth of Scottish innovation. Scottish Millennium Products announced today include the world’s first high storage hard disk for digital cameras and a demolition charge that can split rock without noise, shock or flying debris.

Other new Scottish Millennium Products are the Helica TC, a keyhole surgery tool that uses an ionised beam of helium to destroy infected cells without damaging nearby organs, Tyresafe, which protects against punctures on tough terrain, the EPoint kiosk which gives hotel and store customers internet access, and the Scottoiler, an automatic chain lubrication system for motorbikes

UK-wide, new computer and communications Millennium Products also include the Orange Tree Mast, a mobile phone mast disguised as a Scots Pine, a revolutionary new mobile TV broadcasting system called DENG, and the Guinness advert which uses state-of-the-art digital technology to create surf-riding horses.

New medical products include the Integra, a breakthrough in the removal of brain tumours, two heart monitors, one a ‘smart wallet’ that can broadcast heartbeats to a medical centre for instant analysis, The POD, a portable baby shelter designed to protect infants from harmful effects of the sun and weather, and the CAT Library, which recreates the human immune system in a test tube and contains over 100 billion different antibodies for use in drug research and development.

New safety and security products include Cellopore, which makes microbiologically dangerous water safe to drink, and Highmark Knitwire, a flexible anti-stab, bullet-resistant vest which can be more easily shaped to fit women.

New construction products include the UK’s largest cinema screen, the BFI IMAX at London’s Waterloo, the Bluewater Shopping Centre in Kent, Sir Norman Foster’s new Reichstag in Berlin, and Stratford Regional Station on the Jubilee Line which serves the Millennium Dome.

Design Council Chief Executive Andrew Summers said: ‘With only four months to go before we announce our fifth and final tranche, it is quite clear that there are still plenty of innovations out there, all leaders in their field and earning millions of pounds for UK companies. I look forward to seeing even more come forward between now and our final deadline.
