Some of the most influential names in education today have been brought together by the Design Council as it launches an ambitious new programme of work on education within the context of a competitive, knowledge-driven economy.
As the Government announces its latest plans for the Competitiveness White Paper, Michael Bichard, Permanent Secretary at the Department for Education and Employment, will be among speakers at the launch of Design in Education Week 99 (10am on Thursday 11 March at the Curzon Mayfair Cinema, London W1).
A series of workshops is then being held at the Design Councils offices, involving key voices in the education field such as the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, Teacher Training Agency, National Literacy Trust, Design Museum and Nuffield Foundation. These will inform the development of the Design Councils work on the National Curriculum.
Further contributions to the Design Council programme will come from:
- the commissioning of a new report from controversial think tank Demos (previously commissioned by the Design Council to produce Britain ™: renewing our identity), covering the major economical, technological and social changes affecting the demand for skills in the 21st century and the pressures facing individuals in a knowledge-based economy;
- a new survey on art and design education - the largest ever undertaken - which highlights the contribution art and design graduates make to the national economy;
- the appointment of the Chairman of the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, Sir William Stubbs, to the Design Councils governing body
