The fight against crime is one of societys key priorities. Good design is acknowledged as one of the economys key competitive forces. As the UKs national authority on design, the Design Council has brought together these two issues in an effort to make crime prevention an integral part of the design and development process.
Working with the Home Office and the Department of Trade and Industry, the Design Council is encouraging companies to address crime resistance in their designs and systems at the earliest possible stage.
Phase one of the Design Against Crime initiative is a major research study, funded under the Home Offices Crime Reduction Programme. This is exploring potential barriers to and benefits of designing out crime in six key areas: consumer electronics, vehicles, e-commerce, schools, trains and housing.
Phase two will involve the development of practical strategies, based on this research, to incorporate crime reduction thinking into design training, into the way new designs are commissioned and, more broadly, into the skills and insights which the UKs designers bring to any new job. |
