Burglar alarm - Projects
The programme provides a platform to develop your own educational project in response to the ideas and issues raised by Seymour Powell’s home security proposal. Here are some projects which may be relevant. You may also think of others:

Visit your local DIY store or specialist security shop and carry out an audit of existing burglar alarms on the market. Then do a SWOT analysis of the new home security system designed by Seymour Powell. By mapping the findings of one against the other, decide if you would put the new design into production. Make a case for rejecting or implementing the proposal

Think of another crime spot in your community apart from house burglaries. It could be car or bicycle theft, vandalism or shoplifting. Choose one problem and develop proposals for the design of a new product, service or system that combats it

Fast-forward 20 years and imagine a time when central-locking homes are standard. What else will the home of the future provide in new technology and design? Outline your ideas in words, pictures and models

Devise a creative marketing campaign which promotes the new UK Alarms Ltd home security system as easy to use and a major deterrent to the burglar, using at least three different media (eg press advertising, TV commercials, internet)

Design your own ‘better burglar alarm’ aimed at making either your student accommodation or your parents’ home more secure

Create a series of eye-catching posters for outdoor sites on local housing estates, warning residents of the dangers of burglaries and reminding them to secure their homes

Think of other examples of ‘technology transfer’. What techniques or technologies commonplace in other industries could be adapted to the fight against crime through design? Choose one, explain it and make a business case for investing in such a technology transfer.
