The Design Council's purpose is to inspire the best use of design by the UK, in the world context, to improve prosperity and well being.

Our goal is that by 2003 influential organisations in business, education and government will be championing effective design.

We work with a wide range of organisations and businesses to develop partnership programmes, a world-leading knowledge base of effective design and to create practical tools so that businesses can be more successful by making the best use of design and innovation. We also work extensively with education and government.

The Role

Your principal responsibilities will be to:

  • Develop partnerships which inspire organisations working with businesses to become champions of the use of design as a strategic business tool. Our partners in this sector include the Confederation of British Industry, Institute of Directors, Sunday Times Enterprise Network and the DTI Futures and Innovation Unit. You will work with them and others to involve UK businesses in activities which inspire and enable them to understand and use design and innovation to increase commercial success.
  • To work with partners and others inside the Design Council to develop and disseminate practical tools that help companies to use design effectively and strategically.

You will also:

  • Contribute to the strategic development of the Business Team and to the whole of the Design Council.
  • Manage and control your own budget in order to make the most effective use of resources.
  • Participate in and contribute to Design Council activities outside your area of specialisation.
  • Develop your professional and personal skills and experience.

Skills and experience:

You should be able to demonstrate some or all of:

  • In depth experience and understanding of business and the organizations which service and represent them.
  • A belief in and understanding of the value of design as part of the business process.
  • Confidence in building effective business relationships at a senior level.
  • Ability to achieve strategic objectives through effective operational planning and activity.
  • Experience of working closely with others to deliver measurable results.
  • Self-motivation and an enthusiasm for taking personal responsibility.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.

Other information

The salary for this post is £35,000 to £38,000 depending on your skills and experience - more may be available for an exceptional candidate. Other benefits include life insurance, private health care or health club membership, season ticket loan and a subsidised café. This job, like all our posts, is offered as a three year, renewable contract.

The Design Council is a registered charity incorporated by Royal Charter. Founded in 1944 we have some 50 staff based in award winning premises in Covent Garden.
