Kitchen bin - Projects
The programme provides a platform to develop your own educational project in response to the ideas and issues raised by Seymour Powell’s kitchen bin proposal. Here are some projects which may be relevant. You may also think of others:

Do a SWOT analysis of the new bin designed by Seymour Powell and decide if you would proceed into production if you were the company boss shown in the programme.

Think of imaginative and creative new ways to remove household garbage from your home which do away with the need for a bin altogether.

Write a business plan for the production of the Seymour Powell bin, detailing unit costs, distribution channels and target sales.

Name and brand the ‘better bin’, and devise a creative marketing campaign to promote it, which uses at least three different media (e.g. posters, TV, internet).

Design your own ‘better bin’ based on you own experience of emptying bins and an analysis of user needs, taking your ideas to 3D model stage.

What else is there in your kitchen at home that you think ought to be completely redesigned?

Produce a design management report that sets out a way to improve communication between the designers, modelmakers and company engineers during the development process, based on the experiences shown in the programme.

We are very interested to hear how you are applying these projects on your course. Please give us feedback by sending an email to betterbydesign@design-council.org.uk
