| Life jacket - Projects |
The programme provides a platform to develop your own educational project in response to the ideas and issues raised by Seymour Powells life jacket proposal. Here are some projects which may be relevant. You may also think of others:
Revisit the new life jacket designed by Seymour Powell. Do a SWOT analysis, reverse Crewsavers decision and make a business case for going ahead and manufacturing the new design. Suggest ways to reduce costs and of convincing the ferry operators of the viability of the new design as part of your design management report.
Devise a creative marketing campaign for a chosen ferry company which promotes the new Seymour Powell life jacket as a key reason to use their service, using at least three different media (e.g. press or poster advertising, TV commercials, internet).
Design your own better life jacket aimed at combining the requirements of the ferry operators with the need for ease of passenger use. Take your proposal through to computer or 3D modelling stage.
Fast-forward 50 years and anticipate the design of the future ferry, its facilities, interiors and the safety systems on board. Outline the scenario of a disaster - a storm or collision for example - and describe what might happen.
Design a short film, piece of animation or web-based communication, which gives ferry passengers simple advice on safety and what to do in an emergency.
Think of a simple object that requires a set of instant, intuitive actions by the user (e.g. folding up a sleeping bag, tying up a rucksack, operating a video camera, changing a plug). Set up user trials and conduct time-controlled experiments in your class. Make simple adjustments to see if you can improve user performance.
Rethink the life jacket design using completely different materials and manufacturing processes in a bid to half the cost from £60.
