Design has remained high on the political agenda - whether promoting the UKs design strengths internationally or promoting design in business and industry. However, although an awareness that the effective use of design can improve efficiency and impact has grown, government practice is often a long way behind.
There is now an opportunity for the government to take decisive and co-ordinated action to embrace effective design management itself. Four government departments - the Department of Trade and Industry, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Department for Education and Employment and the Foreign & Commonwealth Office - are participating in a long-term project to manage design more effectively to help them achieve their policy objectives.
This year we will be producing more case studies to demonstrate how departments have used design to add value to policy making, corporate communications and working environments. We are also working with the four departments to explore what tools and techniques can make the design process more tangible and accessible.
Through encouraging, promoting and spreading best practice in design, this project aims to contribute to the governments modernising objectives and activities.
