The Design Council

 
The Council of Industrial Design (later the Design Council) and its Scottish Committee was set up in the closing years of the war by the President of the Board of Trade, Rt Hon Hugh Dalton. Its purpose was 'to promote by all practicable means the improvement of design in the products of British industry'

The Design Council

The Council of Industrial Design's (CoID) first exhibition 'Britain Can Make It' held at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Heralding a new era of post-war social and industrial renewal, 1.5 million visitors saw the products of 1,300 firms. All 5,000 exhibits were specially selected by Council of Industrial Design committees to stimulate interest and awareness of design in both the public and British manufacturers. CoID film starring Joyce Grenfell advocated good design in household furniture such as tables and wardrobes.
