'Designing', a newspaper for schools, was launched with the aim of supporting design education in secondary schools.

The DTI launched the Enterprise Initiative Scheme, administered by the Design Council and offering part-funding of design consultancy costs to small and medium-sized companies

The Materials Information Centre opened in the Design Centre, London

The first edition of the 'Designer Directory' published - a directory of over 900 consultants in all areas of design
